A small metal springwire in the 3 1/2" microfloppy diskette connects to the disk shutter. The spring keeps the shutter closed when the disk is out of the drive. This protects the |recording media| from dust and fingerprints. When the disk is inserted, a mechanism inside the drive opens the shutter so the |read/write head| may access the disk.
